National museum in Delhi is situated at Janpath and is the largest museum of Delhi. It is popularly known as Delhi National Museum. The museum showcases artifacts from many civilizations that have flourished in India down the ages. It takes us back to the history with more than 200000 work of exquisite art collection both from Indian and foreign origin.
The Delhi National museum is the premier repository of antiquities. The museum consists of amazing art work, the different galleries, paintings and various works from all civilizations in different sections can be found. The ground floor of the museum contains many galleries; each displaying the art of particular period. Sir Aurel Stein's collection in Central Asian gallery of this floor is worth seeing. One of the most prized possessions of this floor is the sculpture of dancing girl from Mohenjodaro, dated back to 2500 BC. Some of the other galleries are - musical instrument gallery, jewelers’ gallery, library and many more. Tourists can also purchase some of the items from sales counter.
As we move to first floor museum has a simply outstanding collection of Indian miniature paintings from mughal, rajasthani and pahari schools dating back to 3000-1500 bc. There are statues and carved pillar of the maurya dynasty. The Delhi national museum also possesses shells and bone jewelry of Indus valley civilization of Mohenjodaro and Harappa.
The last floor of the museum houses the historical costumes, weapons and various forms of art, anthropology, woodcarving, fine bronze idols and coins.
