Rajghat is one of the most famous historical places in Delhi. It is a memorial to Mahatma Gandhi - the father of nation. Rajghat is adjacent to Delhi Gate on the Ring Road, just a 4 km drive from Janpath market, the well known shopping street in Delhi. Mahatma Gandhi was cremated on the bank of river Yamuna on 31 January 1948, a day after he was assassinated. As a mark of respect Rajghat was dedicated to him.
Rajghat is a square marble platform with a black memorial stone with "Hey Ram" inscribed on it, the last words uttered by Mahatma Gandhi. Rajghat is surrounded by myriad trees, shrubs and lots of greenery. All the greenery provides serenity and calmness in the environment. With positive vibrations all around the area near Rajghat, tourists visiting Rajghat feel a peace of solace. As a sign of respect, visitors are required to remove footwear before approaching the Rajghat memorial. Prayers are held every Friday at 5:00 pm.
Every year large number of Indians as well as foreign tourists visits Rajghat to pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi - 'The man of non-violence'. In the vicinity of Rajghat other cremation spots of other great leaders of our nation like Jawaharlal Nehru and Sanjay Gandhi can be found. Rajghat is a peaceful, pure and simply beautiful place and a must visit for all tourists and Indians as a tribute to the father of nation: Mahatma Gandhi.
