India Gate - Monuments In Delhi


India Gate, the Pride of India is located at Raj path, in central Delhi. Originally known as All India War Memorial, India gate was built in remembrance of 90000 Indian soldiers who died during First World War and Afghan War.

India Gate was designed by Edwin Lutyens, and its construction got completed in year 1931. India gate is a 42 meters high majestic arch whose base is built from famous red stone of Bharatpur and walls from sand stone. On the walls of India Gate names of those Indian soldiers are inscribed who lost their lives during World War 1 and Afghan fiasco. Above on both sides is inscribed INDIA, flanked by MCM and to the right, XIX.

Inscribed on top of India Gate in capital letters is the line:

To the dead of the Indian armies who fell honored in France and Flanders Mesopotamia and Persia East Africa Gallipoli and elsewhere in the near and the far-east and in sacred memory also of those whose names are recorded and who fell in India or the north-west frontier and during the Third Afghan War.

Amar Jawan Jyoti, an eternal flame burns day and night under the arch. It was added to honor and remind the people about soldiers who sacrificed their lives in 1971 Indo-Pak war.

The magnificent structure of India gate along with Raj path lawns attracts millions of tourists every year. Tourists visit the place to photograph and enjoy this glorious Indian pride and take a walking tour of Raj path to reach Rashtrapati Bhawan, the president house. The India gate monument is illuminated with number of lights in surroundings and inside the monument itself, which gives a magnificent view even from the far distance. A wonderful view of Rashtrapati Bhawan can be seen from Base of India gate.

India gate is surrounded by lush green gardens on all sides. In the evening the place gets crowded with people of Delhi who come there for relaxing, boating and night picnic. India gate is a preferred destination for late night hangout in city of Delhi. Lot of street vendors near India gate sells Indian snacks and ice creams. The place remains alive till 4 o’clock in the morning and is very safe as it lies in high security zone of Delhi.

India Gate also boasts of the Republic day parade being held every year on 26th January, in New Delhi. The republic day is celebrated with the speech of president, remembering all those soldiers who laid down their lives for independence, then the award ceremony to award the people from armed forces and civilian with distinguished performance. The republic day parade brings the culture, diversity and heritage of all states into one platform.
